Habitat Chicago Homebuyer University Instructor Application

Instructor Position Description

Thank you for your interest in instructing a Homebuyer University class! Homebuyer University is a 5-session homebuyer education course, typically with 25-40 adult participants enrolled, that we run several times a year. Habitat Chicago is seeking additional instructors to empower these students with knowledge of the homebuying process in this unique, comprehensive approach to first-time homebuyer education. Please see below for general information about the expectations and requirements for volunteering as a Homebuyer University instructor.

Description: The instructor is responsible for effectively presenting content related to the assigned class and is encouraged to use their own experience in conjunction with a pre-established lesson plan, PowerPoint and materials provided by Habitat Chicago staff. Instructors will be invited to teach one or more classes per year based on interest, availability, and experience.

Time Commitment and Preparation3 hours on day of class and 1-2 hours to attend annual kick-offs and/or debriefs. We require returning instructors to participate in a 30 min phone call to discuss class updates. For new instructors, we require 1-2 hours of phone and/or meeting time prior to day of instruction to discuss class content and instruction. 

Service location and who you will serve with:  This class will take place via Zoom. A Habitat Chicago staff member will manage the logistics of sharing and advancing the presentation as well as participant entry and exit. Habitat Chicago staff will be present on the Zoom meeting to prepare materials and to support the instructor throughout the entire duration of the class.  

Major Responsibilities

  • Demonstrate responsibility with all time commitments in association with the class 
  • Take time to prepare for class by reviewing all of the materials 
  • Use materials provided by Habitat Chicago to present the class, while incorporating instructor’s own professional experience and expertise  
  • Engage students in discussion of topics covered in the class
  • Maintain the Habitat Chicago mission and values, as outlined in the  Instructor Manual, throughout instruction  

Qualifications

  • Professional experience in homebuying industry (please see the listing of classes in the form below for preferred experience type/s by class)
  • Experience with group instruction of adults  
  • Experience working with a variety of income levels 
  • Ability to communicate class content to students with varying levels of exposure to the topic
